In 2008 I bought a potted avocado plant. It was planted in that pot for a few years. The man who mows my lawn planted it in the ground for me. I was very excited with my new acquisition thinking of having a great harvest soon.
The years passed and my avocado tree was beautiful. My little plant grew splendidly, full of beauty!
I was far from knowing that in just 6 days, Central Florida was going to be assaulted by killer hurricanes Irma and Maria. Such an overwhelming storm crushed my beautiful tree.
I never thought that my little tree was going to have to go through such a big odyssey. It was a long and adventurous journey for me, protecting my tree with many prayers.
Ten months later, my avocado tree was doing very well on the road to recovery. Some dry twigs can be seen, but the greenery is very exciting.
A few more years and my avocado tree has grown enormously, but shows no sign of fruiting. And since I’m a city girl, I don’t know anything about agriculture. But well-meaning people advised me to drive a nail into it. And I felt my bones chill, how could I drive a nail into a living tree? That’s so cruel!
Once , the Lord saw many leaves and no figs and cursed the tree. I was also getting impatient. I was about to cut it off, but decided to pray one more time.
And at the end of January 2023, I plucked up my courage and went out and anointed the log with oil in the name of Jesus. I spoke life as the Lord gives us authority for, furthermore, the anointing oil is the only medicine in my house. And that plant was sick and needed healing!
Look what happened two month later! I knew it was God. The barren tree was full of flowers!
I kept checking to see if any little avocados show up. All the flowers disappeared and there were no fruits. After so much emotion, my heart was breaking. But on May 5, 2023, I came to my office to review my Sunday preaching and tried to cheer myself up.
And with a little sadness in my heart, I said to the Lord, “I am thankful that you have answered my prayer. Although, I’m a little sad, but at least those flowers were a sign of hope” And I thanked Jesus.
I felt a little downcast and gave the plant a sad look. And to my astonishment, I saw one small avocado. I almost flew downstairs to take pictures and the joy I felt was indescribable. It happened in two months. Praise the Lord!
Today, I thank God for allowing me to harvest an avocado. God has used this tree to teach me once again that the storms of life only make us stronger, because He guides us with His gaze.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you.” (Psalms 32:8 MEV)
