The Essence of Freedom

Choices are driven by inclinations and disposition.

The essence of freedom is to choose according to our strongest inclination we have at the moment.

According to Jonathan Edwards, a philosophical theologian, the mind is the faculty of thinking and the will is the faculty of choosing.

According to him all choices are caused by something and in the final analysis, it is inclination. Choices are driven by inclinations and disposition. The choice is what we deem to be pleased to us. If I have a physical crave to eat, I am conscious that my mind is making a judgment of what is good for me.

Conflict of Desires

you make your choice according to your strongest inclination.

If the doctor says I should lose thirty pounds for my health. I agree, it is the right thing to do and I am all for it.

Imagine you have finished enjoying a Thanksgiving Dinner and your stomach is full and you have no desire to eat. And since we have a natural ability to make choice, this is a brilliant moment to exercise that ability.

But, what happen in six hours later? The conflict of physical desires will manifest. You’re craving for food and at this moment your strongest inclination is for food. Then you make your choice according to your strongest inclination.

We are Volitional Creatures

The graciousness of God’s grace is beyond explanation and it is by grace that we are saved, by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

The real person is a spirit, has a soul (mind, will, feelings, emotions), and lives in a body which houses the total person. When we are born, our spirit is dead to God, but His grace steps in …

“But God’s mercy is so abundant, and his love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience he brought us to life with Christ. It is by God’s grace that you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4-5 GNT).

With the will we have the natural ability to make choice and if you’re reading this article, God Almighty is extending a loving invitation to you:

“Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food.” (Isaiah 55:2 NLT).

A Wonderful Time to Talk to God

You can accept this gracious invitation by praying:

“I acknowledge that I am a sinner, I believe the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I believe He died for my sins and He raised from the dead to justify me. I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. Thank you, Father God. Amen.”
